Front Brake Disc Bobbin Replacement If your RT has done a reasonable number of miles (being ex-CHP mine had done 60,000miles) you will probably find that the bobbins in the front brake discs are pretty worn and that there is quite a bit of rotational and lateral movement. Certainly mine were getting pretty sloppy and when I noticed one bobbin had fallen out realised it was time to replace them. Now I could have gone down to my local BMW dealer and bought two sets of standard BMW bobbins but I didn't for two reasons.
Instead I ordered a set of aftermarket bobbins from a U.K.-based company called Motobins. These are made by an Italian company called Grimeca who specialise in braking systems. Not only are they made of steel rather than alloy, they are also slightly oversized so that they are a good tight fit in the disc. And the cost. Shipped to me in New Zealand from the U.K. they came to $69.00 U.S. As for the job, I found it easier to remove the front wheel and place it on the workbench. I just went round and popped out the existing bobbins and installed a new one as I went. Now the discs are firm with no rotational or lateral movement. As a result of this I have noticed that the front brakes feel firmer when applied, probably because the disc is not moving around. Below are photo's of one of the existing BMW bobbins and also the replacement Grimeca ones.
